Why drink purified tap water?

The human organism is made up of 60-70% of water, which is distributed in each of its organs: muscles, cells, tissues, blood, etc.. This is why it is very important drink at least 2 litres a day. (8 glasses)

We can drink that bottledor mineral, or thetap water.

A typical family drinking tap water would spend just over €6 a year, whereas Italy holds the European record for consumption of mineral water, with exorbitant costs and consequent pollution.

This is either because we believe that the water from the waterworks is not good or because, as in most cases, we do not like the taste of it.

The problems with bottled water are many:

  •  Tap water costs very little 1.35 to 1.50 euro per cubic metre (1000 litres!) and about 1.50 euro per day with a good domestic sewage plant while mineral water has a cost incredibly higher than that of the aqueduct (from 300-500 times higher).
  • Bottled water is uncomfortable e heavy to transport. Grocery shoppers know this!
  • Due to its own spring characteristics, each mineral water may contain higher amounts of elements than tap water.
  • Recent media surveys indicate an acceptable average quality, but there are some bottled water which, for the values of certain elements, are not recommended for children.
  • Environmental impact to produce PET bottles, bottle water in them and transport it (almost always by road) for distribution, is very high on the environment. According to a 2009 article in the magazine Environmental Research LettersThe energy required to manufacture a PET bottle, fill it, transport it and keep it cool is around two thousand times that required to obtain the same amount of water from a tap connected to the water supply.
  • The amount of water used for the mineralisation and bottling process (as well as for the production of the bottles) is more than twice as much as that obtained.
  • Bottled water is still water, and therefore not free from the risk of alteration, especially in summer when bottles are exposed to the sun in storage.
  • Moreover, as required by law decrees n°152/2006 and n°31/2001, while water from public aqueducts is subject to controls daily and very strict, those on mineral water can also take place after 5 years (see law...).

In conclusion tap water is certainly cheaper, controlled, sustainable and less tiring.

In addition, there are techniques to improve the quality of the water by filtering out limescale, chlorine, metals, nitrites and nitrates, with the use of Microfiltration, Ultrafiltration or Reverse Osmosis water purifiers.

In any case, it must be remembered that any system for purifying water in the home must:

  • be accompanied by a clear instruction manual and maintenance containing the characteristics of the purification system without misleading information on non-existent purification properties.
  • be accompanied by all the procedures to be followed for cyclical maintenance (annual) of the productspecified in writing and under the responsibility of the manufacturer, who must guarantee the customer the necessary support throughout the life cycle of the appliance;
  • be installed by qualified technicians
  • be accompanied by the declaration of conformity of the mounted system.

The legislation regulating water treatment activities to which companies operating in the sector must adhere is the Ministry of Health Decree No. 25 of 7 February 2012.
